Did God Call Me To Stand For My Marriage?

No matter what we do in life, we must hear from the Holy Spirit before moving forward with our decisions. If God gives us a seed (word), he will deliver it precisely on time. The question I often hear is, “how do I know I’m being called to stand for my marriage?” The simple answer is God will speak to you. But how do we know it was God and not our emotions, the enemy, or other people in our life? I’ve spent some time researching how we hear from God, and I have to say, I’ve also experienced all of them while standing.

Ways God will communicate with us while standing for our marriage

  • Aligns With Scripture
  • Dreams/Visions
  • Other Christians
  • Confirmation Of Circumstances
  • Still Small Voice

Aligns With Scripture

The first thing you must understand is that the Holy Spirit will never tell us anything that doesn’t agree with God’s eternal word. There are two meanings for the term word in the scriptures. We have Logos, which is God’s eternal word. This is the word that governs heaven and earth and is given to us through the bible.

“In the beginning was the Word [logos], and the Word [logos] was with God, and the Word [logos] was God” (John 1:1).

We also have Rhema, which is the spoken word of God.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word [rhema] of God” (Romans 10:17).

God’s word can come to us through revelation by his word. I’ll never forget the day I was fasting and had been for three full days. I was just about finished with my fast when I heard the Lord say, “Ezekiel 34.” I quickly opened up my bible and was astounded by what I read.

Ezekiel 34:11-13
For thus says the Lord God: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land;

The revelation was an example of Rhema. God used his word to encourage me to keep standing for my marriage. I had asked him before I started the fast to speak to me, and that’s precisely what he did.

Dreams and Visions

God can also interact with us through visions and dreams. I was visiting my parents for the weekend, and while asleep, had a dream that I was outside gazing over a beautiful garden. I was just about to pick one of the fresh vegetables when my mother shouted, “They’re not done, Jake, they’ll be ready soon. I didn’t need an interpreter for this dream. The fruit was almost ready for harvest but needed more time. I don’t think I need to explain what that means. I’ve noticed that the dreams I get from God are always short and burnt into my mind. Months after I have the dream, I can recall every detail. Out of the two I’ve had, I would say they last about 10-15 seconds in length.

Other Christians

There is a reason God calls us to fellowship. One of those reasons is so we can hear from him more clearly. Here is what his word says about fellowship with other believers.

1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

I’ve noticed over the years that, at times, different Christians will tell me the same thing. At one point, my pastor told me, “Jake, she will be home, and who knows, it could be sooner than you think” He was one of four people that had told me that. The Lord will make his voice known through the lips of multiple Christians. If he has something to say, ask other believers and be still, if two or more people keep saying the same thing, it may be God.

You may also read something in a book or watch a sermon and the next day hear the same advice from a brother or sister. When God wants to speak, he will keep coming at us.

Confirmation Of Circumstances

The best way I can recall God speaking to me is through the confirmation of circumstances. In scripture, we can find this example when Jeremiah is told by God to purchase land from his cousin. God spoke to him through a dream, and the next day his cousin asks him to buy the property.

Jeremiah 32:6-8
And Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field which is in Anathoth, for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.”‘ Then Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.

You see, God gave him a seed (word), and the next day he got his confirmation by his cousin asking him to purchase his land. This is how the confirmation of circumstances works.

Example: I was living at my parent’s house for a few weeks and was told by our Landlord that he didn’t want me to come home. I had a dream that she returned to that place in tears, and that’s what motivated me to stand. I was so upset with God when he gave me the dream because I was broke, and had been told it would be best not to come home. I remember asking God, “How could you show me she’s coming home at the place I can’t return to?” It was only a few days later that a significant check showed up, and my Landlord called and said, “Jake, how would you like to come back to the place?” I knew it was God, and for the first time, had experienced the confirmation of circumstances. God was taking me to the very place she would return.

Still Small Voice

In the bible, the Holy Spirit is called our Helper. He is our guide and is here to speak to us and move us on our journeys in life.

John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

When the Holy Spirit speaks to us, it will always produce peace. With a still small voice, he will guide us. If you have a thought and believe it’s the Holy Spirit, make sure it aligns with scripture and brings you peace. If you keep these instructions, you should do well in life. Nothing done out of impulse is ever from God. We need to listen, wait for peace, and be patient with all we do.

I hope this article helped you understand the different ways the Lord will speak to us. Ask God to speak, and I can promise you, he will!
